How does storytelling work in product photography? It’s pretty easy with commercial lifestyle, but what about a product shot?
Here’s an example:
What does “Alien Abduction” make you think of?
✅ Spotlight from above.
✅ Flashing, colorful lights.
✅ Always at night with lots of fog.
(Basically, the scene from “Fire In The Sky,” which scared the you-know-what out of me as a teenager.)
All that turns into:
✅ Strong top light
✅ Saturated, vibrant colors for the background & stand
✅ Go nuts with the smoke machine
Every product has a story to tell, and until there’s a story to tell, there’s no shoot.
That’s why I don’t plan by thinking about lighting setups or templates or gear choices.
Story leads the way. Creative choices should support that story.
Now I’m going to go get abducted because this is a really good beer.
